As a fan of both STALKER and Crysis, I'm not sure I'm totally in love
with this idea, but have to admit its compelling... Some of it still
looks rough and unfinished (ground texture pop-in, weak weapon
models), but some of it looks really cool.

Almost bizarre in the second video to watch a very STALKER-esque
character get grabbed by the throat Crysis style.

It says the project will be released "at the end of this year or early
next year".

The physics are certainly improved but the graphics were underwhelming -
or at least they were still quite Stalker-esque (I borrowed your word)
and not at all what I expected when I read the title of your post...

Cryengine is great but has some elements that aren't that great for
Stalker - it lacks precision here and there, shadows can be rather
crude, ambient occlusion looks kinda weird (notice weird glow around
player's gun etc), it's mostly visible indoors. Speed optimizations to
make this big thing move at all I guess. Stalker engine may be dated in
places but it's pretty great at big textures and accurate shadows.
Ambient occusion is pretty subtle too (where available of course, stock
SoC doesn't have it). Actually I don't know a game with better lighting
that Stalker, it's breathtaking sometimes.
