I've successfully installed Heavy Gear 2 onto Windows XP. The game
initially refused to play due to lacking the Indeo video codec but I
was able to locate a previous, free version of the codec unlike the
latest version from Intel. They want $15 for it but you can find Indeo
5.11, a working previous version, for free at the link below.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Indeo_Codec.htm

The game's a blast. It's a shame I put off attempting to play through
it unitl now. I'm able to complete the first two missions of the
campaign with no problems, but when finishing the third mission (as
well as some of the training missions) I receive a CTD (Abnormal
Termination). None of the compatibility options afforded by Windows XP
seem to correct the problem. Has any one had any success? It's not
fair that the game plays but won't progress onto the fourth mission.

I saw some screenshots for this game, and there are first person(well..
mech) space missions?? It looked so cool I've never seen anything like it.
I gotta search this one on ebay...

It takes some getting used to but the space missions are a nice break
from the usual land scenarios. At first my gear kept smacking into
boulders and space vehicles, but after a few minutes I was able to at
least reduce the frequency and intensity of my space collisions. I'm
still struggling with Newton's First Law of Motion. <g>

I'd recommend downloading the demo first beforing picking up the game.
Heavy Gear 2 is notorious for being difficult with Windows XP. If you
have a Windows 98SE gaming machine around though then definately pick
this up and give it a go! I haven't enjoyed a mecha game like this
since MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries. It doesn't top either MW2 or Mercs
in my opinion but it's a fun game still.

Will people stop going about Mechwarrior 2 like it's a good game? It's
SHIT. It's practically 2D. It's repetitive. It's boring. The controls
are lame. Heavy Gear 2 owns it.

It was great at the time it was released. Like all games of that era I
wouldn't want to play it now.

No way! I'm not much of a sim fan but MechWarrior 2 was good at its
time of release. It made it feel like you were a massive, bipedal tank
that couldn't stop on command. The music, the presentation, the
perfect feel of the Mechs... It was solid for its time. I guarantee
you my impress is rose tinted and if I were to compare them side to
side there'd be a good chance that Heavy Gear 2 would trump MW2 in
every way; however, when I replayed the first few missions of MW2:
Mercs a year ago via DOSBox it was better than I remembered it. Until
I can get the WIN32 versions of MW2 (either Pentium or TItanium) I'm
going to have to rely on my memories when comparing it to HG2. And
that's a lot to topple.

Eh -maybe by the time I get halfway through HG2 I'll have seen the
light!

Yes it was good at the time of release. But Heavy Gear and all
subsequent mech games are much better. Therefor Mechwarrior 2 is
officially a crappy game.

For the time it was excellent, and in some ways it has never been
surpassed.
The mech2 games had you in multiple different environments with
different gravity/temperatures/etc and real differences in the mech's
abilities due to those environmental factors.

MC2:Ghost Bear Legion alone had you on multiple planets with different
temps, in space and underwater.

Most of the ones since then have had almost no variation at all - even
HG2, they look better, but it's all one generic environment.

MW2:Mercenaries is still the best giant robot game I've ever played
(after the patche for dynamic salvage). What made it great was that it
wasn't a simplistic arrow key and mouse game. The flight sim type
controls really made the game immersive.

I like the genre, and have played pretty much everything from the very
simlike Mechwarrior series, to FPS stuff like Shogo: Mobile Armor
Division. When Microprose took it over, it was still good but dumbed
down just a bit, and when Microsoft took over, it looked great but
pegged the stupid meter. I couldn't even bear the inane squadmate
commentary in any of the MS versions.

Heavy Gear 2 is a cool game, but I feel they made the Gear too wimpy.
I realize they are supposed to be much smaller than mechs, but when a
foot soldier can take you out with a rifle, it kind of defeats the
purpose of armor.

I wish the MW2: Titanium patch wasn't such a kludge. It made the MW2
games look better, if still spartan. I would still go back and play
through it every year or so.

There is no Activision support. You can try the Microsoft Windows Application
Toolkit for XP or bypass mission three with the cheat code.

Heavy Gear II Auto-complete Level
While playing a game, press ~ to display the chat prompt. Then, enter the
following code andpress [enter] to activate: SET MISSION

For online MP lookup the last three of pages of the thread:
